The
handloom products of Orissa
have an individuality of
their own. Bold & unusual
patterns, vibrant yet subtle
blend of colours, unique tie
& dye effects and a
luxuriant texture
characterise them.
Handloom fabrics of
Sambalpur, Sonepur, Barapali
and their vicinity exhibit
considerable taste in
harmonious blending of
colours and elaborate
richness of pattern and
designs. Even the coarsest
of cloth is woven with a
dainty boarder. It imparts
elegance and beauty to a
wide range of products –
from qualities to
furnishings, from dress
materials to tapestry. But
the most popular among them
is the colourful ‘Saree’
which has almost become
synonymous with the wide
range of products. The
unique process of weaving
known as Tie & Dye or
‘Bandha’ is as intricate as
difficult and requires
highly skilled workmanship
involving a lot of time.
Bundles of yarn are first
tied in different sections
and then dyed successively
applying of colours at a
time. The colour scheme is
predetermined according to
the designs and patterns
with such extraordinary
precision that when the dyed
threads are woven together
the designs appear on the
fabrics as if by magic.
Berhampur and Cuttack region
(Nuapatna & Maniabandha) are
also known for similar
fabrics in silk and cotton.
