The 20th Konark Festival was inaugurated by Shri Murlidhar Chandrakanta Bhandare H.E. Governor of Orissa in presence of Shri Debiprasad Mishra, Hon’ble Minister, Higher Education, Tourism & Culture, Orissa, Shri Samir Dash, Hon’ble M.L.A., Nimapara, Shri Rabi Mallick, Hon’ble M.L.A. Kakatpur in the Open Air Auditorium, Konark at 06.30 PM on 01.12.2009.

The first programme presented by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal Mansingh, distinguished Indian Classical Dancer of International repute, who has been awarded Padma Vibhushan in the year 2003. The programme includes Dwi-varnaa, the most unique solo choreography, Ranga Pratishthapan – The time-honoured tradition of purifying the performance arena to establish the Ranga – Devta.Pushpa- puta- The twin styles blossom in geometric progression. Shoonya Mahari – A dialogue between Sabari, the Praana-Shakti and Sabava, youth depicting human body, where the former instructs the later to give up the restless chattering and concentrate on her, the Giver of Maha-Sukha, Nirvaana. Aaj KI Kanya – Depicts the ground reality of today’s women-female-girl as also her aspirations. Aatma-Gyaan- A rendition that embodies Kabir’s saying, “By knowing one, you know all.”


The second programme was presented by Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, a leading teaching institute of Kathak established by the Sangeet Natak Akademyi in 1964.
The programme includes : Mahadev – This is an invocatory benediction in praise of Lord Shiva. Govindashtakam – This is an invocatory benediction in praise of Lord Krishna. The Choreographer has designed this item around few verses ( shlokas) of Govindashtak taken with embellishment of Kathak Vocabulary i.e. Tukra, Pran footwork etc. Gajanan – This dance number is based on an Aarti, most popular in Maharashtra, India. The dancers invoke lord Ganesh, the one who removes all obstacles and bring prosperity in life. Tarana – ‘Tarana’ is a form of singing. This number begins with a Ghazal couplet interpreting the meaning of the song through facial expressions and graceful hard gestures.

  • Sobha Naidu, India’s topmost exponents of Kuchipudi Dance will perform Naba Rasa.

  • Kala Vikash Kendra, Cuttack will perform Mokshya ( Dance Drama).

Programme for 3rd December’ 09

  • Padma Shri Ranjana Gauhar will perform Chandrabhaga ( Dance Drama), Trimudra ( Dance presentation).

  • Padma Shri Thingbaijam Babu Singh group will perform Ritu Samhar.

Programme for 4th December’ 09

  • Vasundhara Doraswamy, venerated guru of Bharatanatyam will perform Om Surya Naranayanaya Namah.

  • Orissa Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar will perform Navarasa.

Programme for 5th December’ 09

  • GKCM Odissi research Centre, Bhubaneswar will perform Kumara Sambhabam

  • Sunanda Nair, exponent of Mohiniattam will perform Kubja, Ashtapadi-Chandanacharchita, Jeeva.
