The 2nd day’s
programme of Konark Festival 2009
started with a Kuchipudi performance
by Sobha Naidu. Among India’s
topmost exponents of Kuchipudi
Dance, Sobha Naidu is famous for her
roles as Chandalika, Satyabhama and
Sri Krishna, among others. She has
been awarded the ‘Nritya Choodamani’,
Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award
and the Padma Shri (2001).
Sobha presented a programme
Natavamini. The Choreography is done
on the theme of the Naba Rasa
corresponding to the nine moods
which we come across in human life.
The second session of the evening
included Odissi performance by Kala
Viksah Kendra, Cuttack.The
celebrated late Babulal Doshi
motivated the luminaries of Cuttack
to revive, patronize and propagate
the declining traditional performing
arts of Orissa. Since its inception
in 1954, the Kala Vikash Kendra,
Cuttack has made an inspirational
contribution to the revival of the
classical arts of Orissa.
Kala Viksah Kendra’s number was a
dance drama titled Mokshya: Built
around glimpses of Gautama Buddha,
the harbinger of non-violence, the
performance depicts the episodes
that shaped the life of the
Enlightened One, from his days of
princely luxury in Kapilavastu to
his life as a wandering sanyasi.
