Date: 1st to 5th December 2009

The 4th day’s programme of Konark Festival 2009 began with Om Surya Naranayanaya Namah (Bharatanatyam) by Vasundhara Doraswamy, versatile choreographer, the torchbearer of the Pandanallur School of Bharatanatyam and the youngest ever recipient of the Karnataka Kala Tilak in 2002.
Vasundhara presented Om Surya Naranayanaya Namah : This piece depicts the danseuse as the devdasi who surrenders herself to her Lord in body, soul and heart. Through the intricacies of yoga and the Pandanallur school of Bharatanatyam, she portrays the destruction of the two demons who had engrossed the world in darkness and pays obeisance to the glory of Aditya, the Sun.
In the second session of the evening the main attraction was Navarasa by Orissa Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar Founded in 1975 by Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. Orissa Dance Academy teaches and promotes Odissi dance, music and related art forms.
Aruna Mohanty, an alumnus and presently the Secretary of Orissa Dance Academy, presented Navarasa: The nine moods or rasas are depicted through an episode from the Ramayana. From the sringara of Ram and Sita’s love to the hasya at Shurpanaka’s predicament; from the bhayaanaka of Sita’s abduction to the final shantam, each one was perfectly presented.
